Our Vision

Our Vision

We envision a world fueled by the joy of radical hospitality, where young Jewish adults feel closer to themselves, each other, Torah, and community — Jewish and beyond.

A world in which:

One's Jewish identity brings them meaning, purpose and joy

Jews of all backgrounds and affiliations can proudly answer the question, “Why be Jewish?”

Jews feel regenerated by Judaism’s opportunities for supportive community, deep inquiry, and social action.

Jews are connected to and inspired by their diverse extended family, the Jewish people.

Our Mission

Our Mission

Our mission is to infuse a renewed sense of belonging, purpose and joy to the next generation of young Jews by growing and strengthening the emerging group of pluralistic rabbinic families called to open their homes and lives to host, teach, serve, and guide their communities.

Why Base?

Why Base?

"Base" is a play on "Beit" the hebrew word for home. The idea of "home" we attempt to share through our work is the place where we are most ourselves, the place in which we are free to dream, to question, and to explore. A chosen home, like chosen family, accepts you as you are and gives you the freedom to become who you want to be. At Base, we bring together a family as diverse as they come- the Jewish people! Like all families the dynamic is simultaneously complicated, messy, profound, conflictual, and integral.

Why Hospitality, Learning, and Service?

Why Hospitality, Learning, and Service?

We believe that a Jewish home is founded upon three things: hospitality, learning, and service.

Hospitality–We are committed to the revolution of kindness Abraham and Sarah started thousands of years ago by opening their home to strangers and welcoming them as friends. Hospitality is a posture of receiving others with compassion and offering what you are able.

Learning–Knowledge is power. Learning empowers us to make informed decisions about our beliefs and behavior. Discussing relevant and diverse Jewish ideas allows us to connect with the shared history and tradition Jews have been debating for thousands of years. Jewish texts act as a springboard for deep questioning and exploration on all elements of the human experience.

Acts of Service–Judaism at its core is about helping create a more just world. While learning is important and helps shape our values, action is the opportunity to actualize our values and to make a positive impact in our communities.

Why Rabbis & Partners?

Why Rabbis & Partners?

We believe that rabbis are meant to serve the Jewish people 'where they are.' As mentors, guides, teachers, pastors and community organizers,  we're taking our pulpit into the heart of where life happens: our neighborhoods and our homes.

While we deeply believe single rabbis can and should do this type of work, partnership has always been a critical part of our core model. Base Partners aren't just the partner to the Base Rabbi, they are critical co-builders of the Base community. Partners come from a wide variety of professional and personal backgrounds and bring valuable alternative and complementary perspectives to every conversation, program, and experience. Together, the Rabbi and Base Partner model the complexity and power of life partnership including constructive disagreement and the natural and inevitable differences in spiritual or religious practice.

We recently launched an expansion of our Based-In part-time model and we are excited to welcome non-partnered and partnered rabbis alike!
